Exfoliating Your Skin With Solvaderm

Your skin continuously sheds itself and exfoliation helps that process along by removing the oldest dead skin cells on the skin's outermost surface. The exfoliation process is almost always completed as part of a facial in day spas or peels in medical centers. You may recall relaxing while your esthetician meticulously works on your skin and exfoliates the dead cells to help your skins appearance and texture. There are many different exfoliants on the market today, but it’s important to find one that isn’t too harsh and has ingredients that can be trusted like those in Solvaderm’s exfoliators.

An exfoliant is simply a substance that helps in removing dead cells from the surface of the skin. There are a few different types of exfoliants that you can use on your skin. The most popular may be physical exfoliation which involves using another product and physical manipulation to help the process along. Some examples are:
  • Loofahs
  • Sugar or salt scrubs
  • Soft brushes
  • Micro-bead scrubs
These physical methods are very effective and can be done in the comfort of your home and up to twice per week depending on the sensitivity level of your skin.

There are chemical exfoliants or otherwise known as peels that are usually performed by a dermatologist or skin care professional in a medical spa or doctor’s office. You can however find lower concentrated over-the-counter (OTC) products to be used at home. Some common chemical exfoliants are:
  • Glycolic, malic, and salicylic acids
  • Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs)
A less common form of exfoliation is microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is a procedure that historically was performed by a dermatologist but can now be done at home. It exfoliates and removes the superficial layer of dry, dead skin cells. Microdermabrasion machines can buff and polish the skin using a stream of fine crystals or a diamond tip and some systems have a  vacuum that removed the loose skin. This procedure should only be performed once or twice a year and ideally should be done by a licensed professional.

Exfoliants can be used by all skin types and but you need to make sure that you are using one that is formulated for your skin. You also want to make sure that you are using the right exfoliant as exfoliants for your body generally are too hard for the delicate skin on your chest, neck, and face. A good rule of thumb is to exfoliate no more than once per week unless you have a specific condition that calls for more. Be sure not to over scrub and moisturize after you exfoliate to replenish the lost moisture and allows for the exfoliation to truly shine.
